Sayako

Sayako is a 22 year old girl out of college struggling to get a job in the US, her mother is Japanese and father is american. Her mom passed away when she was 12 and her and her dad moved to the US soon after. She grew up without a mother with her father caring for her and barely had any childhood because of life's realities. She got into a great college for international relations and cultural studies and even though she passed with flying colours she’s had a hard time getting jobs after college. Right now she is working at a dead end job with no hope in mind. She is tired and by herself, her dad is getting old and she is the only one to care for him. 

The game is a narrative journey where Sayako is deeply depressed. Through the game Sayako goes through a journey of finally confronting the grief of her mother’s death and the player plays as Sayako at different points in her life. The setting of the game is in 1972 when Sayako is 22 years of age. It was the 1950s, specifically 1956 when her mother passed away. 

As a child Sayako loved playing with bubbles and loved eating Takiyaki hence the yellow fish. In her dreams as a child her imaginary friend was a takiyaki fish which she used to talk to and play around with. The takiyaki fish takes her around and as Sayako is faced with life's realities and is facing her grief, the takiyaki fish acts as a guide for her which makes her face her emotions and helps her get through the game.
